Wolf said his Extra Virgin Honey — the honey he is most proud of
— has particular health benefits because of its purity. It isn’t heated or filtered so it retains more of the pollen, creating a more healthful and flavorful product, he said.
I have to say that based on Islam, honey is a source of remedy for human beings. Consequently, I can understand that Dale wolf finds that health benefits can be retrieved from the consumption of honey. However, Dale Wolf mentions a particular type of honey which I am not qualify to discuss about. Nonethelss, here it can be remarked that practicing beekeeping can lead to obtain a product that can be used as a cure.
Among the different beekeeping hives such as the top bar hive or the straw hive, this article will focus on the Langstroth beehive because it seems to be one that is easily obtained in the United States and does not lead a person to have to build one hive common to the United Kingdom, namely the top bar hive. Consequently, if we were to list the parts of Langstroth beekeeping hives, we would have:
Hive stand
Inner cover
Outer cover
Lower deep or brood chamber
Upper deep or food chamber
Bottom board
Slatted rack
Queen excluder
Shallow honey super
A beginner might ask himself/herself about how the components of the Langstroth hive are to be organized. In fact, concerning the base, cypress is a type of wood that appears to be more resistant than others. As it can be imagined, the hive stand permits to separate the body of the hive from the moist of the ground. Moreover, due to the elevation, the entrance and exit point are not likely to be obstructed by the grass.
The entrance reducer that will probably be part of the hive is employed during the colder times to keep the hive warm. This being, such entrance should be used during the warmer month with the beehive’s new colonies.
An important part of the hive is the deep body where the waxed frames are placed. This part of the hive is made of two sections, the upper deep and the lower deep sections. The curation of honey as well as its storage takes place in the lower deep, while, the queen eggs are placed in the upper deep.
Another part of the hive is the queen excluder or a screen stopping the queen to go to the honey supers. The confection of the excluder is such that the size of the queen prevents her from going through. The excluder is to be utilized when honey is actively being produced.
Concerning the choice of whether to have a foundation in plastic or one made with wax, bees can in fact help make the choice. Effectively, because honey bees work faster on a wax foundation, it seems better to provide them with the surface that seems to ease their work. Plus, it is in fact more natural to have a foundation made of wax than one manufactured with plastic.
There is a little bit more details in my guide about beekeeping. However, as you can see, several parts come into play in the formation of a Langstroth beehive such as the base, the hive stand, the entrance reducer, the deep body, the queen excluder. Relatively to the choice of a plastic foundation over one of wax, it appears to me that if one wants to give an environment more in tune with the nature, a foundation of wax might be better.

The fact that many people live in urban areas can be at the core of the question. So lets look at the possibility of practicing beekeeping in an urban area. Yes it is possible to be a city beekeeper. In fact cities can offer some advantages for keeping bees.
Learn about urban beekeeping at the rooftop apiary and garden of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle! Chef Paul Shewchuk shows us his honey beehives and goes over the process of creating and harvesting honey. Hundreds of pounds of honey are made here each year and are used in cocktails and Olympic Hard Cider, made in collaboration with Seattle Cider Co.
In addition to the beehives, the Fairmont’s rooftop has an urban, pesticide-free garden where strawberries, cherry tomatoes, herbs, edible flowers, and several varieties of peppers are grown.
Flat rooftops of city buildings are ideal spaces. They are warm with plenty of sunshine, and away from most people. Therefore from a safety point of view these are great spaces.
The best advantage is that the customers, who would like to buy the honey, are very close, maybe even in the same building. This means a big saving on transportation costs (good for the environment as well).
Cities also often have many houses with small, flower filled gardens, just the ideal space for the bees to forage. Even the large flowering trees, that are found all through cities, are perfect as bee food. And with an increasing trend to “green” our cities, more food is becoming available.
Having enough water for the bees
Naturally, bees would construct their hives near a source of water. Consequently, having them in the city should lead the beekeeper to have sufficient hydration source for his/her bees near their hives. Putting in place sources of water can be achieved with water feeders for instance. There are in fact three ways to have a source of water installed mentioned in my beekeeping guide.
There are, however, certain measures that can be taken to try to prevent problems that could arise from your hobby. Effectively, in spite of what could be though, honeybees can go several miles in order to obtain what they are in need of. Thus, not having plenty of flowers around your house should not constitute a barrier. Nevertheless with regards to stings, some steps that can be taken are, having enough water in your backyard, installing a fence and taking some actions to try to ease possible neighborhood apprehension.
The Fence
To prevent your honeybees from flying too low, the use of a fence can be effective. In fact, the height of the fence could lead the bees to fly higher. Consequently, through this action the chances of your bees encountering your neighbors could be decreased. The fence should be at a minimum of 6ft high. Even though there might be some effort in raising a fence, it is interesting how such a measure could have this impact on the behavior of the honey bees. Additionally, a fence should decrease the possibility that a Langstroth hive be seen easily.
About the Neighborhood
Because we generally have neighbors, and also due to the fact that bees are living creatures that can inflict pain, engaging into actions that would help prevent confrontational situations with your neighbor should be taken. A first tip would be to not locate your hive in areas utilized by your neighbors. Moreover, because of the urban environment you might be living in, limiting the hives to a maximum of two could be advantageous. You could also try to protect your hives from the eyes of your neighbors. By making your hobby something hidden from their eyes, your neighbors might be led to think less about it. Moreover, inviting them to see how bees are not necessarily hostile could counter bad opinions. Through the invitation you can also show that you are in control managing your honeybees. Also, one can offer some honey to his/her neighbor. I see this one as a very interesting move because not only can it help in neighborhood relationships, but by doing so, a person is actually sharing a final product of having honeybees.
Once more, responding to the question at the beginning of this article, yes, it is possible to practice beekeeping in a city. However, because it is a different environment than that of the wild, certain actions have to be taken to not only make the life of your bees easier, but also to avoid having problems with your neighbors. These actions are for instance having a source of hydration for your bees close to the hives, and erecting a fence.

In view of the number of searches on this topic having an article about tools proper to beekeepers seems could be beneficial. Before going any further, you do not have to own all of these tools at once. The beekeeping supply that will be looked at is made of: the smoker, the hive tool, the hive stand the brush and the uncapping fork.
The smoker?
One tool that has to be acquired or is a must-have as it was termed by someone is the smoker. This tool is in fact a closed kettle with a tall body that has an opening for the entrance of oxygen. The smoker is used to calm the bees before you harvest or inspect. What happens regarding the smoker is that after putting chips of burning wood within the smoker, the bellows are used to create smoke. This smoke will leave the chamber from the spout.
Now, what about the hive tool?
Another important element of the beekeeper equipment is the hive tool. The hive tool is made of two parts, the handle and the blade/wedge. For instance, removing without noise the propolis of sections of the langstroth hive can be done with the wedge. To help the beekeeper find the tool bright colors can be used.
Hive stand ?
Despite the fact that Langstroth hives possess stands, getting more elevation of the structure at thirty cm of the ground can be beneficial. Effectively, the stand is a protective mesure against animals that could disturb the beehive. Additionally, the hive stand can help against rotting.
Brush?
Brushing honeybees away can be done with a soft bristled brush when inspecting the beehive. Because, you might not be able to pick up a bunch of honeybees in order to attain the frame a better solution is the use of the brush.
Now, the Uncapping fork
The wax caps can be taken out from the honey suppers with the uncapping fork which is used during the extraction of honey. Because the bees cap the cells filled with stored honey, before the extraction, the caps should be taken out. If one wonders about the aspect of the fork, it looks like a wide flat for having several metal points. The flat fork, the Swedish and the bent fork composes the common types of uncapping forks. Nevertheless, in the case the beekeeper is willing to have the cured honey moved by the honeybees in the upper part of the hive body, the fork can also be used.
As mentioned earlier, you do not have to purchase all of these tools at once to build your beekeeping supply. However, one that is particularly important o have is the smoker. Another essential tool is the hive tool. To these two, can be added the hive stand, the brush and the uncapping tool.

After making some researches I remarked that the topic of the different honey bees’ types seemed to have been looked up thousands of times. Consequently, this article will discuss this subject. What are the honey bees’ types? In fact, it has been estimated that there are 20,000 known species of bees around the world. This being there are two main behavioral bees types, the social bees or the ones that are likely to interest us, and there are also the solitary bees that do not live in colonies. Concentrating on the honey bees, there are 4 common honey bees types: the apis florae, the apis dorsata, the apis mellifera and the apis cerana.
What can be said of the first specie in the list, the apis florae? This type of honey bees is characterized by its smallest size when compared to other species. It is seen as the smallest honey bees species. The apis florae build single comb hives and is sensitive to disturbances. The hives created can be found in cave formations or in a state of suspension from trees. This suspension can prevent ants for instance to disturb the colony or take the honey.
The second type of honey bees, the apis dorsata differs from the first one cited above in elements such as the higher disturbance level that can be tolerated by the apis dorsata, and the bigger size of the bees. Nonetheless this specie of bees shares some resemblance with the apis florae. Effectively, the apis dorsata also can abandon their hives. Additionally, single comb hives are common for this type of bees and can be found suspended from trees.
Thirdly, we have the apis cerena which has contributed to agritulture. In comparison with the previous honey bees types, the apis cerena can be located in tropical regions and temperate countries for instance. Example of countries where this type of bees can be found are japan, Korea, India and Thailand. Characterizing these bees with a single size is not evident because the different climates in these countries have an effect on the size of the bees. To the climate can be the added the size of the hive, and the size of the colony for example. The apis cerena may also leave its hive. However, these bees in contrast with the honey bees types mentioned before can be domesticated.
Moreover, we have the bee specie called apis mellifera which is generally used by beekeepers in the United States and in certain parts of Europe. Nevertheless this European bee can also be located in Asia. The apis mellifera live in cavities, such as tree trunk and caves. It can also be added that this specie of bees constructs combs that are parallels and has a social behavior.
As one can see, there are several common types of honey bees; some are social while others are not. The common honey bees types are the apis florae, the apis dorsata, the apis cerena and the last apis, the apis melifera. As many of us are aware of, bees can hurt. As a result when one decides to have beekeeping as a hobby, knowing how to lower the chances of being stung can be a good move. However, beekeeping is not only about bees inflicting pain, because from this hobby, honey can be obtained. However, before a beekeeper gets to the point where he/she is able to collect honey, a beginner might be asking himself certain questions. One interrogation might be “Can I have a beehive when I live within a city?” Another question could be: “What about my neighbors, how to have them accept the idea that one or two beehives at proximity are not necessarily something dangerous?” One last question a novice might wonder about is: “Which beekeepers supplies should I have?” To these questions, you will find answers in my guide to beekeeping.
City Beekeeping
First of all, it is not always common to imagine about beekeeping within an urban area. This being, the ability to keep bees is not necessarily hindered because one lives within a city or town. In fact, there are ways to go about beekeeping without creating a lot of perturbation in the neighborhood a person lives in. In fact, it is possible to practice beekeeping in a backyard. Moreover, bee hives can also be installed on top of buildings.
Beekeeping and Neighbors
What about the neighbors? Will they be comfortable having they bees near their houses? If they are, show them that your bees are not likely to hurt them? As it can be imagined, the fact that bees can injure, could lead to think about their dwelling at proximity as a source of possible pain. In order to put off this fear, certain actions can be taken. These actions can go from putting up a fence, to having enough water for the bees in your backyard. You might also invite your neighbors to show them that there is not really a fear to have because of the bees. More ideas to counter neighbors’ apprehension are mentioned in my beekeeping guide.
Beekeeper Supply
What about beekeeping equipments? Which one should you have? What is their use? These are also questions that could be asked. Going in a store without a support to refer to for the equipment you might need might lead to spend more time to know what is really necessary if you do not find store manager willing to help you. How should you dress for beekeeping? Can you wear a short sleeves shirt? What about a long sleeve shirt without gloves? Once more, the guide to beekeeping I have been mentioning will give you some information about the equipment used and the way you should be dressed for beekeeping.
